Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Mental Health Website

The CDC Mental Health Web site includes basic public health information on mental health.  The site aims to foster collaboration and advancement in the field of mental health in support of CDC’s public health mission.

National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)

In addition to information of federally supported mental health research activities, the NIMH website provides general mental health information.  Educational materials such as publications, brochures, information sheets, reports, news, and press releases are also included on the website.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

SAMHSA was established in 1992 and directed by Congress to effectively target substance abuse and mental health services to the people most in need and to translate research in these areas more effectively and more rapidly into the general health care system.  SAMHSA’s mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s communities.

Medline Plus Mental Health and Behavior

The National Library of Medicine, a part of the National Institutes of Health, created and maintains MedlinePlus to assist patients and their families and friends in locating authoritative health information.  The site brings information about diseases, conditions, and wellness issues in understandable language.

Healthy People

Health People is a website managed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans.  This link connects to the “Mental Health and Mental Disorders” topics and objectives page.

Surgeon General

The Office of the Surgeon General, under the direction of the Surgeon General, is part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health in the Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  The Surgeon General serves as America’s Doctor by providing Americans scientific information on how to improve their health and reduce the risk of illness and injury.

American Psychiatric Association

The American Psychiatric Association is the world’s largest psychiatric organization.  It is a medical specialty society representing more than 36,000 psychiatric physicians from the United States and around the world.  Information on various psychiatric conditions as well as links to the Healthy Minds, Healthy Lives Blog and the Let’s Talk Facts Brochures are listed.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Since its inception, the Lifeline has engaged in a variety of initiatives to improve crisis services and advance suicide prevention.

WebMD provides valuable health information, tools for managing your health, and support to those who seek information.  WebMD aims to provide credible information, supportive communities, and in-depth reference material about health subjects.

Psych Central

Psych Central is the Internet’s largest and oldest independent mental health social network.  Since 1995, it has been run by mental health professionals offering information and over 180 support groups to consumers.  It aims to provide relevant, objective information about mental health, psychology, and relationship issues.

Healthy Place is the largest consumer mental health site, providing information on psychological disorders and psychiatric medications from both a consumer and expert point of view.  It aims to provide authoritative information and support to people with mental health concerns, along with their family members and other loved ones.
